Answer to second, i think it would have been more painful for him to lose you at the time and to imagine what you might have exactly done. Likely that he chose to be around you to cope easier. He could be waiting for the right time to leave you. Not for a one night stand or something like that, but for someone he would really love again. Probably he is waiting to meet that person.
